American rock band The Grateful Dead has released 13 studio albums, including its 1967 self-titled debut. More than two decades after the release of its first album, The Grateful Dead experienced its most successful record, 1987’s In the Dark. The album, the band’s first in seven years, peaked at number six in the United States and became the group’s first album to receive double platinum certification since American Beauty 17 years earlier. It is one of only three Dead records to sell more than 1 million units.
While the only American Beauty single, Truckin’, failed to crack the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, the lead single off of In the Dark enjoyed more widespread popularity. “Touch of Grey” went to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 while also reaching number 15 on the adult contemporary charts and giving The Grateful Dead a number one hit on the mainstream rock charts for the first time.
